Friend —
Often, when I walk the streets of Boston, I think about the people who fought for our nation’s independence.
I think about the patriots who dumped British tea into the Boston harbor in protest. I think about Paul Revere, who rode his horse out of Boston to warn the minutemen of British forces. I think about every young person who left their homes and families to join up and fight when the call for revolution rang out.
They put their lives and livelihoods on the line for an incredibly powerful idea: A country free from monarchical, overseas rule. A country free to chart its own course and form its own government of, by, and for the people.
Now, of course, America’s founding had much to live up to in the way of equality and justice for all. We still aspire to reach those goals today.
But for all of the deep moral wrongs and injustices that mark our nation’s history, one truth remains: America has been a free nation — a representative democracy — that has resisted the urge seen around the world to turn towards kings, tyrants, dictators, and authoritarians in times of crisis.
After 250 years, Donald Trump is putting all of that into doubt.
When Trump sends the military and an army of federal agents into cities like Washington, DC he is giving us a glimpse of life under a real authoritarian regime: Random police checkpoints, men with guns on every corner, crackdowns on free speech, the targeting of activists and organizers, masked thugs separating families, the constant surveillance of the population, and the ever-present threat that you could be the next person taken away.
Now, Trump has his sights set on Chicago, Baltimore, and perhaps even Boston. Nevermind that he is trampling on the Constitution, states rights, and democratically decided local laws. Trump is running the dictator’s playbook: Create an “emergency” that can be used as an excuse for the suspension of civil rights and American liberties.
Friend — Boston’s legacy is one of revolution. We beat an authoritarian King before, and we know we can do it again.
But this revolution won’t be fought with muskets and cannons. No, we need a political revolution, in Boston and in every community across the country. A revolution in the streets, in our workplaces, in town halls, and at the ballot box that recaptures the American spirit of independence.
Now is the time when we must decide: Are we going to continue down this road, where Donald Trump gains more and more power at the expense of our democracy? Or will we form a mass movement of Americans that oppose this far-right takeover and are ready to win our country back.
I know which side I’m on. If you do too, I’m asking you to take the next step today.
Please, make a contribution to my campaign as we rally the American people to join our political revolution against Trump’s authoritarian government. All of our organizing, all of our protests, all of our efforts to win control of Congress hinge on having the resources we need to compete. That’s why it’s so important that everyone chips in when they can afford to.

Boston’s role at the center of the revolution is a legacy that I’m very proud to represent in Congress. I will not let that legacy be upended by a wannabee dictator like Donald Trump.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
