"Potential PBS replacement network says slavery was ‘no big deal’ in video"

“The right-wing media company that may be Trump’s pick to take overtake traditional public broadcasting networks has a video where a cartoon of Christopher Columbus minimizes slavery."

“Being taken as a slave is better than being killed, no?” the clip says. “Before you judge, you must ask yourself, ‘What did the culture and the society of the time treat as no big deal?'”

Despite its look resembling a normal broadcasting channel for kids, the messaging of PragerU’s shows have very specific purposes. Its short, buzzy explainer videos have been called out for denying Native American history, one video on Indigenous Peoples’ Day saying that it is a holiday made to make Americans feel guilt, denying climate change, and being Islamophobic.”

Judge rules Trump administration broke law in deploying National Guard soldiers to LA this summer.

In a brief order on appeal, a three-judge panel with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit said it would grant the Trump administration’s motion for a stay in the case until its argument could be heard in greater detail.

The panel’s decision essentially maintains the status quo, since the judge who ordered limitations on the troops’ actions delayed his own ruling from taking effect until next week to allow the administration time to appeal.

Harvard University won a crucial legal victory in its clash with the Trump administration, when a federal judge said that the government had broken the law by freezing billions of dollars in research funds in the name of combating antisemitism.

Pennsylvania is one of only 7 states that voters have the ability to elect ALL their judges and justices in partisan election. Your voice matters! Make a plan today to vote in the judicial elections this November.

Learn more about the retention election and the candidates here.

“Robes that these judges and justices wear are black: They're not red, they're not blue. Justices and judges wear black robes for the people, not for the political parties,” said Kadida Kenner, of the New Pennsylvania Project. “The allegiance that these justices have is to the Pennsylvania Constitution.”

The most important election you’re not talking about? The PA Supreme Court retention election on November 4.

Join Committee of Seventy, League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts on September 8 for a fireside chat with the justices themselves, so you can understand what’s at stake before you vote.

This event will be livestreamed for those who can't attend in person.

Across the country, we’ve seen challenges to rights many of us once assumed were secure—whether it’s due process, free speech, or even fair elections. Moments like these remind us how important it is to have strong institutions that can stand up against abuse of power.

In Pennsylvania, our courts have often played that role. The state Supreme Court and other courts have protected our civil and voting rights and helped preserve the balance of our democracy.

Join us, For Our Future PA, and The New Pennsylvania Project to learn how Pennsylvania’s courts have safeguarded our rights in the past—and why they remain essential to protecting democracy today.

Founding CEO Kadida Kenner presented about Why Courts Matter at an event hosted by Chester County Marching Forward on August 27th in Chester County.

Bittersweet goodbyes

Those who follow our work closely might know Quentin Mansfield here at NPP, who spearheaded our Equitable Democracy Project. This project was funded by a two year grant that is coming to a close. The goal of this project was mobilizing voters for environmental and climate justice.

Why are we talking about environmental justice?

-Environmental harm disproportionately affects Black, Brown, and low-income communities

-Frontline communities often underrepresented in electoral decisions

-EDP connects voting, community organizing, and environmental health

Quentin recently graduated from University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, and will now be practicing law in Chicago as part of the next chapter in his career! We wish him well, and will miss him greatly on the NPP team!

Everything we do, from hosting town halls and producing podcasts to knocking on doors, expands Pennsylvania's electorate by engaging Pennsylvanians to be civically involved and encouraging them to turn out to vote twice a year, none of it would be possible without you.

The Justice Department issued subpoenas as part of an investigation into Fed governor Lisa Cook, whom President Donald Trump is trying to remove from the Fed.

Background: Trump can’t fire a Fed governor without cause. His administration accused Cook of mortgage fraud and the Federal Housing Finance Agency sent a criminal referral to Justice.

The Pentagon has approved the use of Naval Station Great Lakes, on the outskirts of Chicago, as a staging ground from which the Trump administration can launch operations against undocumented immigrants, said two defense officials familiar with the issue. If deployed, National Guard or active-duty service members could also be housed at the facility.

The president is expected to sign an executive order Friday to rebrand Defense Department as War Department. Trump believes the change "will sharpen the focus of this Department on our national interest and signal to adversaries America’s readiness to wage war to secure its interests," according to a document describing the forthcoming order obtained by The Washington Post. It's unclear if he can permanently change the name without legislation from Congress.
