By Trygve Olson This is the fifth article in a seven-part series: AI vs. Autocracy: Seven Lessons in the New Battle for Democracy. In the early 2000s, I worked in places where elections were already broken, at least by Western standards. I saw ballots that never got counted. And yet, even in those places, people still showed up to vote — not because they believed the system was fair, but because they believed it might become fairer if they fought for it. Technology gave them hope. Back then, we believed tech might save democracy. But that’s not what happened. Because regimes adapted. Now, with AI — especially large language models (LLMs), deepfakes, and synthetic bots — we’re watching that same playbook unfold again. But this time, it’s happening here. What the Autocrats Will DoAuthoritarians don’t need to cancel elections. AI gives them the power to erode belief in the process, before, during, and after the vote. Before:
During:
After:
This isn’t theoretical. As I wrote in the Battle for Democracy, “When doubt becomes more persuasive than proof, democracy loses.” I’ve seen this strategy before. What Democracy Must DoWe cannot stop this by defending the logistics of elections alone. That means expanding the front line from poll workers and ballot counters to include:
We must use AI to defend democracy, not fear it passively. Here’s how: Before the vote:
During the vote:
After the vote:
This is no longer about ballots alone. Three Things You Can Do Today1. Share how the system works — before it’s attacked. 2. Talk about how you trust, not just who. 3. Support local election defenders. Bottom LineAuthoritarians won’t need to steal elections. They’ll just use AI to steal your belief that the results were real in the first place. If they succeed at that, it doesn’t matter who wins, because the system itself is already broken. But here’s the thing: We still have time. Let’s defend both.
