Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are seeing measles spread quickly across Sudan’s Darfur region. Low immunization rates and ongoing violent conflict are making the spread of the contagious and deadly disease even worse.

After war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, regular vaccination programs were interrupted, sometimes for months. While the vaccination campaign in North Jebel Marra initially slowed the outbreak, cases began to rise sharply again in February—a pattern we are seeing across Darfur. To manage the influx of patients across the region, MSF had to add more pediatric beds in three hospitals.

“The ongoing conflict is also contributing to this outbreak, constraining the capacities of medical actors to both prevent and respond to outbreaks of contagious diseases,” said Dr. Cecilia Greco, MSF’s medical coordinator for Central Darfur. Repeated displacement, Dr. Greco notes, “has made the illness spread even faster across the region, further complicating the situation.”
