We'll be at the Supreme Court for trans kids' rights to play.

ACLU Supporter, while students go back to school this year, we're preparing to go back to the Supreme Court.

It's a new term, and in just a few months we'll be arguing in front of the Justices to defend transgender students' right to play sports. Here's what to know:

During a surge of anti-trans legislation, states like West Virginia banned transgender girls from playing sports. We sued on behalf of an eleven-year-old girl who was banned from her middle school track and cross country teams – and we've won against this cruel restriction in the lower courts.

Now, West Virginia has appealed to the Supreme Court to review the case, where we'll keep fighting against this discriminatory ban.

We'll be clear: Every student should have a chance to play and compete – and no child should be denied opportunities because of who they are. While we fight for these rights, we wanted to remind students in public schools that you have the right to be yourself in school, too. This school year, know your rights: <[link removed]>

LGBTQ Students in Public Schools: Know Your Rights. 1. Schools can't discriminate against you on the basis of your sexual orientation or gender identity. 2. Your school is required to respond to reports of harassment or discrimination. 3. You have the right to dress in a way that reflects your gender identity at school and at school events. 4. School officials can't out you to anyone, including your parents, without your permission. 5. You have a right to express yourself, including discussing LGBTQ topics 6. Schools can't prevent you from bringing dates of the same gender to school events. 7. Multiple courts have affirmed trans students' right to access separated programs and facilities (like bathrooms) consistent with their gender identity, and some states explicitly protect this right. We're rooting for you this school year, and we have your back. <[link removed]>

We'll never stop fighting for a world where every LGBTQ youth grows up safe to be who they are.

Together,

The ACLU Team
