DNC: President Trump joining a Fourth of July event at Mount Rushmore is "glorifying white supremacy." "In a since-deleted tweet, the Democratic National Committee accused President Trump of 'holding a rally glorifying white supremacy' by attending the fireworks display at Mount Rushmore on Independence Day." (National Review) The Democratic National Committee (DNC) criticized President Trump attending a Fourth of July event at Mount Rushmore as ... "a rally glorifying white supremacy."
They deleted the tweet, but the damage had been done -- which really means that screenshots of it had been taken already. (You can see it here for yourself.) The DNC did not return a request for comment from National Review.
The results are (finally) in ... and don't count the establishment out yet! "Former Marine combat pilot Amy McGrath won the Democratic Senate primary in Kentucky on Tuesday, overcoming an unexpectedly fierce challenge from progressive state Rep. Charles Booker." (The Hill) The results are finally in from last Tuesday's Senate primary in Kentucky -- and it turns out the establishment pick won.
Amy McGrath won the Democratic Senate nomination over progressive state representative Charles Booker. But the race coming so close was a surprise: she out-raised her opponent nearly 40-to-1.
But our favorite story of this primary? Elizabeth Warren had endorsed McGrath last summer ... and then switched to endorsing Booker just two weeks ago.
Amid criticism from right and left -- plus an ad boycott -- Facebook announces newsfeed changes. "Facebook announced Tuesday that it will begin prioritizing original reporting in its News Feed. In a blog post, two senior employees explained that the platform will use artificial intelligence to determine which articles on a particular issue are most often cited as the original source." (The Hill) Facebook is facing attacks from the left and the right, plus a new corporate campaign that has more than 100 businesses opting out of Facebook ads next month.
In the midst of this news, Facebook announced a newsfeed change: it will "begin prioritizing original reporting," i.e. being the first person or page to post something to the massive site.
It's unclear how this will affect what news -- political and otherwise -- appears most often.
Getting the band back together. Biden brings Obama alums on board with his campaign. "In the past few weeks, four former staffers who worked for Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett joined Biden’s campaign. Karine Jean-Pierre, Julie Chavez Rodríguez, and Ashley Allison all joined within one week starting May 20, in senior adviser roles." (Axios) The four "longtime Obama White House staffers," who worked for Valerie Jarrett, joined the campaign in advisory roles just a few weeks ago.
This news comes at the same time as stories that emphasize President Obama's involvement in the 2020 election -- and after his highly successful fundraiser with Joe Biden. Previously, Obama alums had been in the news for a New York Times op-ed critical of the Biden campaign strategy.
