A few weeks ago, Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to Washington, DC, an authoritarian move made under the guise of "fighting crime."
Here’s the truth: DC’s crime rate has dropped to a 30-year low. There is no crime wave. But Trump invoked emergency powers to take control of DC’s police force anyway and claimed only he could restore order.
He deployed these troops under the Home Rule Act, which allows temporary federal intervention only during genuine emergencies, and it expires after 30 days without Congressional approval. That 30 day deadline is coming up, and now, Trump is demanding Congress pass a sham “crime bill” to make his takeover permanent.
If that bill becomes law, Trump's takeover won’t stop with DC. It would:
- Give Trump sweeping authority to override mayors, city councils, and governors anywhere in the country
- Strip communities of their right to self-govern
- Set up a permanent framework for federal crackdowns on dissent and protests
We’ve already seen a preview of this authoritarian playbook. Trump deployed federal agents into Los Angeles to suppress peaceful protests and intimidate immigrant communities. California is still in court fighting back, and now, rather than risk another legal defeat, Trump wants Congress to hand him the authority he was denied.
We need to act now to demand Congress refuse to approve Trump’s plan.
