Now that Greg Abbott has signed Texas’s racially discriminatory gerrymandered map into law, we need to talk about the responsive effort it has triggered in California as Democrats fight back.

The California legislature just passed legislation — the Election Rigging Response Act — that will allow the people to push back against Trump’s attempt to rig the midterms. Unlike in Texas, California will present the maps to voters in a November special election.

It’s pretty simple: Voters will cast their ballots and decide whether or not lawmakers can redraw California’s congressional maps temporarily to combat the power grab happening in Texas.

If voters approve this map, it will protect the rights of communities of color and keep Californian communities of interest together while forcefully defending against the existential threat to democracy posed by Donald Trump’s actions.

The reality is, next year’s midterm elections will be some of the most consequential we’ve ever had. We are using every tool at our disposal to defeat the nationwide Republican efforts to dilute voting power — especially for people of color.
