Dear John,

You’ve seen it, you’ve lived it: around the world, the political climate is changing, impacting the futures of LGBTIQ people everywhere.

The super election year of 2024 presented a unique opportunity to examine the state of LGBTIQ inclusion in democracies around the world, with over 70 countries holding national elections. As more than one and a half billion votes were cast, LGBTIQ communities and other marginalized groups were often the first groups to suffer under the rising attacks against democracy. Yet our communities continued to insist on political inclusion by running for office, monitoring election-related hate speech, and demanding that political parties adopt platforms affirming our rights.

* Progress amid pressure: Historic representation gains and election practices that improved inclusion.
* Democratic stakes: How LGBTIQ people and organizations push back on authoritarianism and strengthen inclusive democracy.
