Dear friends,
Today’s the first day of school in NYC!

The first day of school always fills me with joy. I always look forward to seeing students excitedly come back from their summer vacations, eagerly seek out their old classmates, make new friends, and yearn for the possibilities of the year ahead. And as the parent of a pre-schooler, this year I’ll get to witness that excitement in our family firsthand.
It’s a great reminder to me that the wonky and abstract policy and budget fights that take place in Albany have a direct and measurable impact on the daily lives of families right here at home, and how deeply personal the stakes are for all of us to win those fights.
During the four terms you’ve sent me to Albany, I’m proud of the work I’ve done to support students and families across our education system, including:
* Delivering record school funding each and every year, including this past year when we secured the highest level of school aid in history [[link removed].] .
* Writing legislation to ensure that lockdown drills are trauma-informed and age-appropriate [[link removed]] — a measure adopted by the NYS Board of Regents last July.
* Keeping kids safe on social media [[link removed]] by protecting their personal data and breaking the hold of addictive social media algorithms.
* Expanding street safety [[link removed]] by increasing the number of red-light cameras in NYC, bringing 24/7 speed camera operation to intersections near our schools, and cracking down on license plate fraud [[link removed]] .
But I know our work is still not done. I’m committed to expanding childcare options for young families so we can achieve universal childcare . Families’ needs don’t stop at the dismissal bell, so we need to fight for universal after-school care as well. And because success in the classroom begins at home, we need to build more housing to meet the needs of growing families so they can enjoy housing stability.
Now more than ever, too many families are feeling the pinch in their pockets from a tepid economy, stagnating wages and increasing costs from Trump’s tariffs [[link removed]] . That’s why I believe so strongly in expanding the family safety net with my Working Families Tax Credit, which would expand the child tax credit and lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty , and by passing common sense laws like my bill to grant a sales tax holiday on school supplies .
I know many of these issues are personal for you. They’re personal for me, too. I want you to know that for as long as I have the privilege to serve you in Albany, I’ll never stop fighting for our families
Sincerily,

Andrew Gounardes is a champion for the working class and middle class families that are the backbone of New York.
He’s passed more than 100 bills into law, including legislation to close a loophole in the state’s wage theft law, expand the life-saving school zone speed camera program, guarantee family death benefits for public workers who died from Covid-19, and help secure and expand benefits for 9/11 responders.
He is working to expand the Tuition Assistance Program to help make college more affordable for New York students and to dismantle the legal protections that allow perpetrators of workplace harassment and discrimination to prey on vulnerable workers.
He understands that every day quality of life issues affect the livability of our neighborhoods, which is why he’s fought to improve subway and bus service in the outer boroughs, make the MTA accessible for all riders, and to end the nuisance of modified car mufflers and exhausts with the SLEEP Act.
Andrew and his wife Melanie live in Bay Ridge, where they are raising their sons Evan and James.
Andrew is a graduate of local parochial and public schools, Hunter College - CUNY, and the George Washington University Law School. He is a founding member of the Hellenic-American Leadership Council.
