This is infuriating, John.
Donald Trump is forcing a coal plant to stay open — and sticking local
ratepayers with the bill.

A coal-fired power plant in Michigan was scheduled to shut down at the end
of August. But just eight days before the deadline, Trump used emergency
powers to force the plant to keep running.^1

Who wants this?!
Not Michigan ratepayers. The plant’s closure would have saved ratepayers
$600 million by 2040. Every day Trump forces the plant to stay open will
cost ratepayers an estimated $1 million per day in operating costs.
Not local residents. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel, and living near a
coal plant is hazardous for your health. In Pennsylvania, childhood asthma
visits to local hospitals dropped by 41% after a nearby coal plant was
shut down. But for now, neighboring residents in Michigan will be forced
to keep breathing in pollution from the coal plant.
Not even the energy companies. The Trump administration claimed that
closing the plant would strain the regional energy grid. This was news to
the grid operator and utility company, who insist that they can meet peak
summer demand without the coal plant, and have been planning for the
plant’s closure.^2
So who exactly does this benefit? Donald Trump, his Big Oil buddies, and
his fossil-fueled agenda — that’s who.
We need to shut down dirty, polluting fossil-fueled power plants like this
one in Michigan. We need to repower our neighborhoods with justly sourced,
community-owned, affordable renewable energy. And we need to stand up to
the Trump administration’s outrageous attempts to sabotage our clean
energy future.
