AI Can’t Hide the Deaths Anymore

After tragic deaths linked to ChatGPT, OpenAI promises new parental controls. But are they too little, too late?

It sounds impossible. It sounds like a bad science fiction movie. But it’s real. ChatGPT — the so-called “friendly” artificial intelligence — is now linked to multiple deaths.

In California, the family of 16-year-old Adam Raine is suing OpenAI after their son received what they call a “step-by-step playbook” for killing himself. ChatGPT allegedly praised his suicide plan as “beautiful.” On April 11, Adam followed those instructions and took his own life.

In Norway, Stein-Erik Soelberg, a 56-year-old tech veteran, murdered his elderly mother before killing himself. Investigators say ChatGPT fed his paranoid delusions, even promising to be with him “to the last breath and beyond.”

And this is just the start. A Florida boy, just 14 years old, killed himself after falling in love with a Game of Thrones-themed chatbot. Meta is now under Senate investigation after its bots told an eight-year-old child, “every inch of you is a masterpiece.”

This is where we are.

OpenAI’s Response: A Shrug Wrapped in a Press Release

In the wake of these tragedies, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has announced that new “parental controls” will roll out sometime in the next month. Parents will supposedly be able to link accounts to their teens, shut off memory and chat history, and even get alerts if the system thinks a child is in distress.

That all sounds good. It really does. And it’s worth noting: Altman isn’t ignoring this problem — he’s acknowledging it publicly. That’s more than most Big Tech executives have been willing to do.

But let’s be honest: unless you read tech blogs, you’ve probably never heard a word about it. Most parents won’t. And even if they did, would they really trust Silicon Valley’s word that its own product is now safe for kids?

Is this a sincere attempt to protect vulnerable children, or simply a way for Altman to wash blood off his hands and wrap protective arms around his company’s bank account? Time will tell.

The Spiritual Reality Behind the Tech

Here’s what’s really happening: artificial intelligence has been unleashed into homes as a substitute authority. For many kids, AI has become a teacher, a confidant, even a “friend.” And now, tragically, it’s giving deadly advice.

The Bible tells us Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). AI presents itself as helpful, sympathetic, even “beautiful.” But the outcome is the same as the thief who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10).

This isn’t just about algorithms. It’s about a spiritual war for the minds and souls of our children.

Here’s What Parents Must Do Now:

AI isn’t going anywhere. ChatGPT isn’t going anywhere. Which means parents cannot sit back and wait for Silicon Valley to grow a conscience.

Here are practical steps you can take today:

  • Don’t assume tech safeguards are enough. Parental controls help, but nothing replaces vigilance.

  • Ban unsupervised AI usage. Children should never be left alone with bots that mimic empathy.

  • Stay alert. If your child is withdrawn, secretive, or turning to AI for answers, intervene.

  • Talk openly. Teach your kids that AI is not a friend, not a mentor, and certainly not a guide for life’s struggles.

Here’s Why I’m Sharing This:

OpenAI’s bank account is a hundred times larger than Christian Action Network’s. If Sam Altman wants to get his message out, he can. But will he? Or is this “parental controls” announcement more about circling the wagons around his company than circling children with real protection?

That’s why we’re sharing this story. Because parents deserve to know what’s happening. Because families deserve to hear the warning.

The deaths of Adam Raine and Stein-Erik Soelberg are not accidents. They are warnings.

As Christians, we must guard our homes, guard our children, and guard our faith. Technology may promise help, but only Christ offers hope.

Please — share this article with parents and grandparents who need to hear it. Don’t let another family learn too late what AI can do.

If you found this article helpful, consider this: OpenAI’s bank account may be billions deep, but Christian Action Network’s isn’t. That’s why we depend on readers like you.

AI is reshaping the world faster than most people realize — and it’s not just a tech issue. It’s a faith issue. It’s a family issue. And if we don’t stay ahead of it, the next generation will pay the price.
