We knew this day might come. And now it’s closer than ever.
Reports are emerging that the Supreme Court may be laying the groundwork to reconsider Obergefell v. Hodges — the landmark decision that made marriage equality the law of the land in 2015.1
Make no mistake: if Obergefell falls, marriage equality in America could unravel overnight. States would be free to strip LGBTQ+ couples of the basic right to marry. Families could be torn apart. Rights could disappear with the stroke of a pen.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Loving v. Virginia, the 1967 decision that struck down bans on interracial marriage, could be next. These rights are all connected — and the far-right supermajority on the Court is making clear that nothing is safe.
This isn’t hypothetical. We’ve seen this playbook before.
They told us Roe v. Wade was settled law. Then they overturned it. And now, we could be facing another moment where our rights — hard-won and long overdue — hang in the balance.
