The RNC Research account thought they had a clever attack when they tweeted this about me:
Let me be clear: What’s “out of touch” is pretending that militarizing our streets is a solution to gun violence, while gutting the very programs that prevent it in the first place.
What’s out of touch is ignoring the fact that 76 percent of Americans oppose cuts to Medicaid, and 70 percent support SNAP benefits, and cutting those programs anyway.
What’s out of touch is Donald Trump manufacturing a crisis to distract from his failures as president.
I know my city. I was born and raised in Chicago. I raised my family here. And I listen to my constituents: They want jobs, strong schools, and affordable healthcare – not troops marching through their neighborhoods.
I refuse to play into Trump’s distractions. I’m here to fight for Illinois families, but I can’t do it alone.

In Illinois, we honor the victims of gun violence with action, not political stunts. That’s not out of touch. That’s leadership. And I’ll never apologize for it.
