Dear Friend,

September is here and that means a few things: the kids are back in school, Congress is back in session, and locals’ summer begins!

It was great to spend so much time in San Diego during the long district work period in July and August. I hosted many community events, met with local leaders and groups, and did important oversight to ensure that federal agencies are following federal law. Here are some of the highlights:

Congressional Oversight Visits

As a Member of Congress, one of my most important responsibilities is to conduct oversight of federal agencies – that means showing up, asking hard questions, and making sure our communities are being served effectively and safely and their rights are being respected. My team and I have conducted a few recent oversight visits.

I visited the Coast Guard at Sector San Diego to ensure their immigration operations are following the law and to have candid conversations with service members.

I visited the Social Security Administration field office in Kearny Mesa to make sure these systems are working and people in our district are getting what they need.

Finally, I met with Liberty Military Housing and visited their Howard Gilmore location after two children tragically fell through windows and died. I will continue to demand accountability, eliminate loopholes in the law, and raise safety standards to make sure this never happens again.

Child care: supporting families and providers

If you get these newsletters, then by now you probably know that expanding access to affordable, high-quality child care is one of my biggest priorities. Right now, families in San Diego pay an average of $22,400 for infant child care every year. Meanwhile, many providers are struggling to keep their doors open and make ends meet. The system is broken, so I’m committed to finding ways to fix it.

Over the last month, I visited several local child care facilities to talk with providers about the challenges they face and learn what is working for programs that offer high quality, affordable care. (Plus, I got to spend time with lots of kids – which is always a bonus!)

I also hosted a roundtable with local parents to hear about their experiences accessing child care and what we can do to improve the system.

Standing up for our community

President Trump’s policies are driving up costs in San Diego. That’s why I spent time hearing directly from our community about how this is impacting them.

I joined Congressman Scott Peters for a roundtable with Family Health Centers to discuss the serious impacts of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill. This law is creating a health disaster: millions of people will lose their insurance, hospitals will close, and new caps on federal student loans will price out many students from medical school and worsen our doctor shortage.

I also held a press conference with Congressman Peters to highlight the cost of Trump’s tariffs on San Diego families, workers, and small business owners.

Housing Solutions: Grantville Safe Parking Lot Opening

This month, San Diego County opened a new Safe Parking Site in Grantville, which will provide folks sleeping in their cars with a safe place to park overnight and a pathway to permanent housing. I’m proud that I secured $850,000 in federal funding to build this site.

We have a lot more work to do, but this is a step in the right direction towards safe, affordable housing for everyone.

Spending time in our community

One of my favorite parts of the last month was being out in our community and spending time with all of you. Amid the flood of grim news out of Washington D.C. and across the country, it’s so important to spend time connecting with people and finding joy.

I joined Parks After Dark in Linda Vista and supported their backpack and school supply giveaway. It was great to see so many families enjoying the evening in the park with music, activities, and food!

I also joined Bayside Community Center’s 3rd annual bocce ball tournament! It was so much fun to get outside, try something new, spend time in the community, and celebrate the great work Bayside does for San Diego. (Watch a video recap here.)

Looking ahead

As we move into the fall, we have a LOT to do here in Congress. The House will be voting on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to set the funding limits and policy priorities for the Department of Defense, and we’re marching towards yet another government shutdown deadline on September 30.

At every step, I’m focused on doing everything I can to hold Trump and his administration accountable and to protect as many people and programs as possible. I’m ready to fight – and I hope you are, too. Stay tuned.

Warmly,
