On Sunday night, a powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. Entire villages have been reduced to rubble, with many people still trapped, and damage to water infrastructure increasing the risk of disease. More than 1,400 people have been killed and more than 3,000 injured, according to local authorities. As the scale of destruction becomes clearer, the death toll is expected to rise significantly. Immediate humanitarian aid is critical.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are already responding in Nangarhar and Laghman provinces and urgently assessing next steps. We’ve distributed emergency kits to help resupply two of the main hospitals. At one hospital we visited, 600 people have been admitted so far, supplies are running low, and patients are being treated in the corridors. Our teams in Afghanistan are only able to respond because of supporters like you.
