September 2025 Newsletter

Dear WIIS Friends & Colleagues,

As we approach the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 this October, a landmark moment for the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, WIIS is proud to convene its upcoming conference, The “1325@25” Anniversary Conference: Advancing the Future of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, in partnership with The Athena Initiative: Advancing Human Security in International Affairs at the George Washington University, the New Lines Institute, the Institute of World Affairs, and the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

This anniversary comes at a critical moment—democratic spaces are shrinking, new security threats are emerging, and civil society faces unprecedented challenges. Together, we’ll ask: How do we implement WPS in a world of new security threats, and adapt WPS implementation to new political and security contexts?

This conference is more than a commemoration. It’s a chance to look forward, ask tough questions, and reimagine how the WPS agenda can adapt and thrive. We look forward to learning, debating, and shaping the future of this agenda with you.

In solidarity,

Dr. Lauren Van Metre

President & CEO, Women In International Security (WIIS)
