** Message from the Secretary General

Between evolution and revolution - how the new generation of leaders takes charge will make all the difference

Asalaam alaikum,

Travelling around the country and speaking to hundreds of traditional Muslim community leaders and youth, you become acutely aware of 2 different worlds. The older generation that built the communities and institutions that we live in who are overworked, and the much larger younger generation who are frustrated that things are not changing fast enough and the feeling that they are being denied the opportunity to lead.

Any doctor will tell you that a healthy body is one in which fresh blood flows freely. Any stagnation or blockage isn't just bad, but if taking place in a clinically vital area, it is catastrophic for the whole body in the form of a heart attack or stroke. The key to saving the life of the patient is to ensure the speedy resumption of blood flow.

This does not always mean that the previous generation must give way to the new and disappear into some retirement home. It means that they need to adjust from being football players to coaches. This change in focus would mean the vital experiences, tarbiyyah and wisdom of our predecessors would be slowly and surely inculcated in the new generation of leaders who would need to step up.

However, for now, we are still some distance away in most cases. Will this situation end in a messy and painful revolution where the youth try to overthrow or bypass the legacy organisations and individuals or in a more gradual, but slower evolution where the previous generation start transitioning into coaching the new leaders on the block?

The answer depends on the choices we make, but the clock is ticking.

Warmest regards,

Dr Wajid Akhter

Visit My Mosque 2025 – Celebrating 10 Years of Community and Connection

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th October 2025

This year marks a special milestone – 10 years of the Muslim Council of Britain’s Visit My Mosque campaign, where mosques across the UK open their doors to neighbours, friends, and wider communities in a spirit of unity, openness, and hospitality.

Theme for 2025: #OurStories | #OurNeighbourhood
In 2025, we will celebrate the people, experiences, and connections that make mosques the heart of local communities. Whether your mosque is taking part for the first time or has been a proud host for many years, now is the perfect time to get involved.

Let’s come together to make this anniversary year a memorable one.
