Dear neighbor,

I hope you have been staying cool during this heat wave. I’ve had a busy week around the district, visiting some iconic CA-31 establishments and meeting with local partners. I stopped by cooling centers throughout the district to deliver water and popsicles to residents taking a break from the heat. I attended Azusa Pacific University's Military and Veterans Center groundbreaking ceremony and met with Easterseals at their Adult Day Services in Glendora. Finally, I met with Azusa Mayor Gonzales and Captain Landeros to discuss ways to enhance public safety in our communities.

Congratulations to Azusa Pacific University on the groundbreaking of their new Military and Veterans Center! When completed, this new center will be instrumental in supporting our veterans and military students on campus. I’m proud to see these investments being made for our men and women in uniform. Thank you to all of those who have served our nation, and to Azusa Pacific University for building this resource center.

Thank you, SEIU Local 99, for stopping by to discuss the critical need to protect our childcare center employees and entire education workforce. These roles play a pivotal part in creating a welcoming learning environment for our children to succeed. Thank you for representing these workers and being a voice for labor justice.

Thank you, Captain Landeros, Mayor Gonzales, City Manager Gonzalez, and Director Allen of the Rio Hondo Police Academy, for stopping by my district office to discuss supporting our local law enforcement and public safety initiatives. CA-31 residents and families deserve to feel safe in their communities, and the Azusa Police Department is a valuable partner in helping us maintain safe neighborhoods.

It was a pleasure joining Mr. Munoz’s class at Workman High School. I enjoyed talking to his students about what it’s like being a member of Congress and what I do in Washington, D.C. I was impressed by these students’ engagement, curiosity, and intelligent questions. Thank you for letting me join your class and go Lobos!

Easterseals is a national network of support that provides essential care services to children and adults with disabilities, older adults, veterans, and their families. I stopped by their Adult Day Services in Glendora, which opened earlier this year and has been operating a number of supportive programs to help adults with disabilities. I met with staff to discuss the importance of these vital services in our communities and the need to keep them open.

This Labor Day weekend, we honored the many achievements of the American labor movement in establishing fair wages, safe working conditions, and vital workers' rights. Labor Day is a testament to the collective power of workers who come together and demand fairness. I will always champion the rights of workers and hope everyone has a chance to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones.

Last week, we celebrated Women's Equality Day, a commemorative holiday declared by Congress to honor the ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 26th 1920. Women’s Equality Day is a time to reflect on the fight for women’s suffrage, and a reminder of the ongoing efforts to achieve full gender equality.

August 28th marked 62 years since the March on Washington in 1963, where over 250,000 Americans came together in Washington, D.C. to show the nation that it was time to end segregation for African Americans. It was there that Martin Luther King Jr. shared his dream and vision for America, which helped spark the momentum that led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
