Officers from the department’s Harbor Division responded at 11:30 p.m. Sunday after the suspect barricaded himself on the second floor of the hotel at 140th Street and Vermont Avenue, LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes told City News Service. LAPD officers at the scene requested assistance from a SWAT team, which arrived and began trying to coax the suspect into surrendering. The suspect eventually surrendered to police just before 1 a.m. Monday, Cervantes said. It was not known what prompted the suspect to barricade himself at the hotel. The man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run, causing injury. He's yet to be identified publicly. Both deputies were released from the hospital by Tuesday morning. The incident was reported around 10 p.m. near East 9th and Main streets. Video showed the driver’s side window of the police SUV had been smashed. The hood of the patrol vehicle also appeared to be crumpled. Damage was also seen on the passenger side of the Tesla. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel were at the scene treating a male who was experiencing back pain, freelance media firm KNN News reported. No injuries were reported among the officers involved in the crash. The cause of the crash was unclear, but the intersection was closed while officers conducted an investigation. KTLA 5 Man Accidentally Shoots Woman in The Leg in Valley Glen A man is in custody Monday after allegedly accidentally shooting a woman in the leg in the Valley Glen neighborhood. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Division responded to the 6400 block of Fulton Avenue and Victory Boulevard at 12:14 a.m. Monday regarding reports of a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they were told the suspect was playing with a gun when it accidentally discharged, striking the woman in the leg, an LAPD officer told City News Service. Officers took the man into custody at the scene, police said. The woman was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel. MyNewsLA Pursuit of nude woman ends in standoff in the Westwood area A police pursuit of a woman, who was reported to be nude, ended in a standoff in the Westwood area Tuesday morning. The woman was reported to be leaning out of the vehicle, a gray Ford Bronco, talking to officers with the Los Angeles Police Department. NewsChopper4 was over the scene where the standoff was affecting traffic on Sepulveda Boulevard and Montana Avenue. Drivers were advised to avoid the area. Swastika painted on Encino storefront prompts hate crime investigation Police are investigating a possible hate crime after a swastika was spray-painted on the door of a Jewish religious supply store in Encino. The vandalism was reported around 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Mitzvahland Judaica shop on the 16700 block of Ventura Boulevard. Surveillance video posted on the store’s Instagram page shows someone walking in front of the shop before stopping to spray paint something on the building. The video shows a yellow swastika was left on the lower portion of a glass door. Based on the type of graffiti, arriving officers took a report of vandalism involving a hate crime, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to KTLA. An investigation is underway into the incident. A separate Instagram account showed several other acts of vandalism in yellow spray paint that were also said took have taken place in the Encino area and involved anti-Semitic messages. KTLA 5 Police investigate possible drowning at MacArthur Park Lake in Westlake Los Angeles police are investigating a possible drowning at MacArthur Park Lake in Westlake on Monday. Police were called out to investigate the possible drowning around 11:30 a.m. after an unresponsive man was found in the water. The victim is a 35-year-old man, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man's name was not immediately released. A small section of the park has been closed off. ABC 7 ‘Just jump!’: Watch N.J. cops catch kid leaping from 2nd floor of burning house An 8-year-old was rescued Monday after jumping from the second floor of a burning Asbury Park house and into the arms of two police officers and a neighbor, authorities said. The child was caught by Asbury Park Police Officers Dewitt Bacon and John Walsh and local resident Joseph Dunbar after leaping from the window of the Prospect Avenue home, police said. Video released Tuesday by the department shows the moment the child was told to “just jump” after pushing the screen off the window. “Asbury Park police officers train for fast-moving, dangerous situations, and yesterday’s rescue shows the value of that training and the strength of our community,” Asbury Park Police Director John B. CBS 2 LAFD rescues 2 hikers from remote trail in Topanga State Park Two male hikers were airlifted from a remote trail in Topanga State Park on Monday afternoon after reporting that they were feeling unwell and unable to return to their starting point, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews were dispatched to the 20800 block of Entrada Road near the Will Rogers State Historic Park area. Paramedics reached the hikers, who were assessed on the trail, according to officials. Both men agreed to be hoisted out by helicopter but declined transport to a hospital. No further medical treatment was required. KTLA 5 Flea-borne typhus cases rising in LA County The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is urging residents to take precautions due to a rise in flea-borne typhus cases. The county is currently investigating outbreaks in central Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Flea-borne typhus cases have been rising in Los Angeles County since 2010. The county identified a record 187 cases in 2024. In 2025, there have already been 106 reported cases, which is a higher number than at this same time last year. Public health officials anticipate more cases in the coming months, as infections typically peak in the late summer and fall. Flea-borne typhus is a preventable illness caused by the bacterium "Rickettsia typhi." It is spread by infected fleas and is not transmitted from person to person.
