Donald Trump is flouting the Constitution, threatening the public’s right to know what the government is up to, militarizing our streets and disregarding seemingly every rule and law he comes across. If he succeeds in normalizing this lawlessness, the damage to our democracy will be devastating.

This is a crisis. And it’s time Congress stepped up. That’s why, as Congress reconvenes this week, we’re laying out the most urgent things Congress should do to protect our democracy, fight back against Trump’s corruption and ensure our government is truly working for the people.

If you’re ready to help CREW push Congress to take a stand to defend our democracy and hold our government accountable, please make a donation now to support our work → [[link removed]]

Here's what Congress needs to do to protect our democracy during this crisis—and for the long haul:

1. End the militarization of our streets

Earlier this month, Donald Trump declared a “crime emergency” in DC–despite a drop in crime over the last year and a half–and deployed National Guard troops and federal law enforcement to patrol the city. This unprecedented imposition of federal power follows his deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles and comes at a time when he is publicly mulling deployments to other American cities like Chicago and Baltimore. Make no mistake, this is another step toward authoritarianism for Trump, and it should be addressed immediately by our lawmakers.

That’s why CREW’s urging Congress to pass the resolution introduced by Rep. Raskin to end the DC takeover and get to work on existing bipartisan proposals to reform emergency powers to limit the president’s authority so that Trump can’t do this elsewhere, or ever again.

2. Step up to protect the separation of powers and prevent executive overreach into congressional budgets

Congress needs to rein in Trump’s brazen executive overreach. Already in his second term, Trump has ignored congressionally appropriated budgets to cut funding for programs that people depend on.

He has claimed the power to unilaterally redirect disaster relief funds, strip independent agencies of resources and punish departments that won’t bend to his political will. If Congress doesn’t reassert its authority over the power of the purse, Trump will just keep acting more and more like a king who is not accountable to anyone.

3. Oversight into Trump's conflicts of interest, emoluments and corruption

Trump has racked up countless conflicts of interest and engaged in unprecedented corruption in his second term. From accepting a jet gifted from the Qatari government to golfing incessantly at properties he profits from to hosting a dinner for the top holders of his memecoin at one of his resorts, Trump’s conflicts of interest have only expanded since returning to office.

Congress must take steps to hold Trump accountable and pass legislation to rein in this corruption and ensure the president is working in the best interest of the public, not personal profit.

4. Demand transparency about Trump's abuse of the justice system to target political enemies

Since his inauguration, Trump has used the Justice Department to target his perceived enemies, like political opponents, news organizations and universities. In doing so, he’s used the justice system as his own personal weapon.

Congress needs to aggressively push back against this abuse of power and make the American people aware of the severe harm that Trump is doing by weaponizing law enforcement agencies.

5. Ban congressional stock and crypto trading

Finally, Congress must finally ban stock and crypto trading by its own members to restore public trust.

Without a clear ban, lawmakers will continue to profit off the very crises they are supposed to be solving—fueling corruption and deepening public cynicism. Even as Congress must urgently work to hold Trump accountable, they must also keep their own house clean.

Listen John, Donald Trump’s actions since the start of his second term have undermined our democracy. It can seem overwhelming when the threats are so intense and widespread, but we have an action plan. Now it’s time for Congress to step up.

CREW is fighting to hold Trump and his administration accountable, and working to ensure Congress takes action to do the same.
