John,
Donald Trump is actively trying to rewrite history.
What’s at stake? The truth itself.
The White House has announced efforts to conduct a review of the Smithsonian museums and expressed frustration over their portrayal of dark parts of America's history, including slavery. This is just another example of the racist violence of erasure woven into American culture.
To be clear: there would be no America without slavery and to deny that is the denial of truth. We know this administration has no interest in the truth. That’s why Color of Change will stand as a vanguard to the truth and protect and preserve our stories, our culture, our past no matter how ugly the truths are.
The accounts of Black life are rich with history and meaning; our work will seek to preserve and legitimize it against erasure.

We have seen these efforts before; from banning books to promoting inaccurate accounts about slavery and the civil war, these types of efforts are designed to whitewash history and erase America’s uncomfortable truths. The nation is suffering because we have never been able to learn the true nature and heinousness of American chattel slavery. This erasure and pacifying folklore about the very system that built the wealth of this nation has left an open festering wound that is infected by MAGA. It is our collective responsibility to ensure the next generation has an opportunity to heal and inherit the truth.
Until Justice is Real,
