September is Workforce Development Month in Minnesota [ [link removed] ] and around the country. It’s a time to salute the workforce development professionals dedicated to linking people with employment, connecting jobseekers and employers with career and business growth opportunities and helping drive economic development in communities across the state. I think this is a month to celebrate!

Of course, as DEED’s Deputy Commissioner for Workforce Development, I’m partial to celebrating workforce development whenever possible. I’d like to share some reasons why we all should take time to acknowledge these essential efforts.

At DEED, we understand an inclusive labor force is key to our state's economic strength. Fostering welcoming workplaces is essential because our demographics are changing rapidly. By 2035, it's projected that as many as one in four Minnesota workers will be from a community of color or an Indigenous population and that as many as one in seven Minnesota workers will be foreign born. These changes, coupled with an aging population less likely to be in the labor force, require a proactive approach to meet workforce needs. We must continue to align our workforce development system with employer needs and prepare Minnesotans for family-sustaining wage careers.

The efforts of workforce development professionals are critically important in helping workers and employers adjust to a shifting labor market. We're doing this through increasing registered apprenticeships, strengthening industry partnerships, bringing more Minnesotans into the labor force, and integrating AI into our programs as a powerful tool for learning and career advancement. This involves collaboration across state agencies, local workforce boards, community partners, educational institutions and employers. 

DEED and our partners in the CareerForce system are on the front lines of this effort. We connect job seekers with training opportunities, help them identify their skills and interests and assist with job search strategies. And we help employers find the qualified candidates they need to grow and thrive.

Join me in celebrating Workforce Development Month – and celebrating the workforce professionals engaged in these essential efforts that benefit all Minnesotans.
