Friend, the Trump administration says they want to address the overdose and fentanyl crisis. But their actions tell a different story. They are continuing massive budget cuts that will make it harder—if not impossible—for many people to get the help they need.
The Trump administration and Congress have already slashed at least $345 million from federal programs that fund addiction and overdose prevention services, $588 million from drug-related research, and nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid—the biggest source of addiction treatment funding in the U.S.
These federal funding cuts are dangerous and will gut:
Addiction treatment
Naloxone, the medicine that reverses opioid overdoses
Medications that reduce cravings and ease withdrawal
Research into lifesaving approaches to the overdose crisis
And even funding that keeps hospitals open
Next, the administration wants Congress to slash $26 billion more from overdose prevention and addiction care. They plan to do it by restructuring the Department of Health and Human Services and creating the “Administration for a Healthy America” which could happen during the federal budget process over the next few months. In fact, Congress just came back from recess today and lawmakers are already trying to add these devastating cuts to their budget proposals. Learn more about what’s at stake.
