We are living in scary times for anyone who values freedom of speech, dissent, expression and human rights. We know our community is aware of how central a free and independent press is to democracy. While we never expected corporate media in its current state to fully represent the needs of our communities, we’re alarmed that the imperfect system we have is being further chipped away. This is a page out of the fascist playbook: Keeping people in the dark allows authoritarians to consolidate power.
As a small nonprofit we closely manage our budget, especially during uncertain times. As you know, we’ve been working hard to close the large gap in our fundraising. While 2025 appears to have been better than 2024, we still need to be ambitious with our fundraising goals in order to break even.
While the New York Times runs interference for Israel’s genocide, the Washington Post bolsters the views of the billionaire class, Paramount (which owns CBS) settles a frivolous lawsuit with Trump in order to win approval for its acquisition by Skydance, and the Trump administration defunds CPB, worsening news deserts nationwide, it’s clear we can’t rely on the system that got us here.
Here’s some crucial work your generosity has helped fund recently:
WaPo Editors Doing Their Best to Conceal Reporters’ Vital Work on DC Occupation
Western Media Manufactured Consent for Israel’s Murder of Palestinian Journalists
CounterSpin: Joseph Torres on the FCC and Structural Racism
FAIR remains nimble, even amid these current attacks on media and nonprofits. The reason we are able to stand strong during this difficult and uncertain time is because we are audience-supported. We’ve never accepted advertising or government grants, and though we are grateful for the handful of small foundations that support our work, our readers and listeners are our backbone.
When you donate to FAIR, your funds go directly to helping us produce groundbreaking and moment-defining analyses on FAIR.org, the CounterSpin radio show and in Extra!.
Thank you for your support and for being part of this crucial mission! We truly could not do this work without you.
Sincerely, Your Friends at FAIR
