THIS WEEK'S TL;DR:

Get a primer ([link removed]) on states' rights; track ([link removed]) federal rollbacks locally; gain ([link removed]) an inspiring cohort of writers; launch ([link removed]) your career in memoir-writing; advance ([link removed]) health equity in your area; access ([link removed]) information not available to the public

Immigration. Polarization. Transgender medical care. The U.S. economy.
These are just some of the topics covered by Poynter’s Beat Academy ([link removed]) , which aims to help journalists cover the issues that concern their communities by delivering topical, digestible webinars featuring the nation's leading experts.
This fall, Poynter faculty and Beat Academy captain Jon Greenberg ([link removed]) returns with two new topics:

* Sept. 18, 1 p.m. Eastern: The States, Trump and Democracy ([link removed])
Get the scope of states' rights to understand policy making in education, elections, health care and the environment.
* Oct. 16, 1 p.m. Eastern: Tracking climate change rollbacks ([link removed])
Learn how to use database tools and resources for tracking federal climate change rollbacks locally.

Each webinar is free, 75 minutes long, and features reporters covering these issues day in, day out.
Ahead of the sessions, Jon shared behind-the-scenes, insights and advice to our readers:
🤔 How do you choose the topics for Beat Academy sessions?
We pay attention to the news and find the dynamics that are likely to show up in communities across the country. I basically ask myself, if I were the assignment editor, what angle in this should we explore in our backyard? It’s all about bringing story ideas to the surface.
🤔 What are some tips for beat reporters covering local governments and climate change rollbacks?
The first step is to see what might be affected, whether that’s a home heat pump installation program or a utility scale solar project. Then you need to check to see if in fact, the program or project is on hold, moving slower, scuttled or steaming ahead even with the rollbacks.
There’s also no substitute for calling the agency, chamber of commerce, nonprofit and advocacy staff to hear what they see going on. You can pretty quickly find where the story options lie. After that, it’s just the usual process of connecting with anyone who might have a dog in the fight.
🤔 Could you give our readers spoilers for what you'd like to tackle next?
Next year the country will experience how the Trump administration has changed things on the ground. We will be dealing less with what’s possible and more with what is. That’s true for tariffs and inflation, immigrant deportations and businesses, and SNAP and the OBBB Act. That’s just a sampler. Helping state and local newsrooms find the framework and data to help explain this to their audience is going to be key as we get into the midterms. That’s what I spend my time thinking about.
Interested in real-world examples, insights on federal actions and strategies for localizing complex national stories? Tune in live to Jon's next sessions: The States, Trump and Democracy ([link removed]) and Tracking climate change rollbacks ([link removed]) .
