Fighting Trump's DC power grab. <[link removed]>
Friend –
President Trump's effort to take over D.C. streets with federal agents and National Guard troops, and to otherwise intervene in our public safety system, is a brazen power grab.
We know that this power grab is not about safety – it's about creating fear and further eroding our democracy. The president has relied on a phony emergency as an excuse to overstep his power and micromanage D.C. And now we have a real emergency – the threat that this unnecessary flood of federal forces and military poses to the safety and constitutional rights of the people of D.C.
But we will not be intimidated into silence by these disgusting tactics.
The truth is that despite the Trump administration's attempts at fear and intimidation, everyone in D.C. has rights, regardless of who they are and their immigration status. And at this moment, knowledge is power.
Here are three ways you can meet this moment with us:
* Visit our Fighting Trump's D.C. Power Grab resource page: <[link removed]> where you'll find information on your rights, the unfolding situation, and what the ACLU-D.C. has said.
* Register for the ACLU: Know Your Rights Training <[link removed]> on Friday, September 5, 8 p.m. We want to make sure you know your rights when protesting this extreme abuse of power by the administration.
* Attend our sold-out Membership Meeting: <[link removed]> on Tuesday, September 9, 6:30 p.m. at the National Press Building, if you have already registered. We'll be discussing the National Guard, the federal take-over of local police, public safety, and immigration. You'll hear from ACLU-D.C. legal and policy experts as well as representatives from immigrants' rights group Ayuda and the Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality. If you have not already registered, please stay tuned for future events.
Since day one of the second Trump administration, our message has been clear: no president is above the law. No matter what uniform they wear, people in power are bound by the U.S. Constitution and all federal and local laws. With your support, we'll continue to resist injustice and reimagine a just and free D.C.
In unity,
ACLU of the District of Columbia
