Innovation Lab at Banner Health Olive Branch Senior Center
Cox Innovation Lab

On August 13, I had the privilege of attending the ribbon cutting for the Innovation Lab at the Banner Health Olive Branch Senior Center. Cox Communications is generously sponsoring the donation of eight new computers and 50 digital classes per year, which will teach seniors how to identify online scans, navigate telehealth appointments, and more. This is a meaningful investment in technology, learning, and the future of our Sun City community.

Maricopa County Receives 84 National Association of Counties Achievement Awards!
NaCo 2025
________________________________________________________________________

Naco 2

I was truly honored to attend the 2025 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards ceremony, where Maricopa County received an unprecedented 84 awards!  The most we have ever received.

These awards recognize innovative programs and services across a broad spectrum, from workforce development and public health initiatives to water conservation and solutions to help with the extreme heat.

Seeing the dedication and hard work of our county departments was incredibly inspiring. Their creativity and commitment are what make Maricopa County thrive and stand out among counties nationwide. Meeting the talented staff behind these achievements reminded me just how fortunate we are to have such passionate individuals driving progress and innovation every day.

To all those who contributed to earning these awards: you deserve this spotlight and our deepest appreciation. Your efforts not only elevate our county but also set an example of excellence across the country. Thank you for making Maricopa County one of the best places to live and work.

BNSF Hearing Update
BNSF

On August 20, the Board of Supervisors voted to delay a hearing on the BNSF Railway project until November 5.  BNSF Railway is proposing to build a large railway project in Wittman, NW of Surprise bordering Grand Ave, that will include a 1,770-acre Intermodal facility, a 1,420-acre Logistics Park with warehouses, a 1,109-acre Logistics Center and a 22-acre Wastewater Treatment facility.  BNSF projects 22,000 vehicle trips per day in and out of the area when the project is at full buildout.

Railways have federal preemptive rights dating back to the 1800’s, which likely means that BNSF railway could build portions of the project, including the Intermodal Facility without local permitting or zoning approval. It is debatable if the Logistics Center could be built without local permitting and zoning approvals, but it appears clear that the Logistics Park, which includes the warehouses, would need local zoning approval.   BNSF Railway has told me that they may proceed with portions of the project, even if the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors denies their zoning request.

If you are in favor of or opposed to this project, I need to hear from you. Please submit your thoughts in writing to: www.Maricopa.gov/ContactLesko [ [link removed]:*2F*2Fwww.Maricopa.gov*2FContactLesko/1/0101019891525e83-c6ed2139-c065-41f2-b510-1160eefd410c-000000/SRaDGzWID6fgx4ED9_he2jQVb0Bu8aJl3CbmH7JGbb8=417__;JSUl!!KLEl7LSNBzLtGRk!dgppiaorGaUP5jn6Mwgy-L_1pMmT7SlqEVP-PrUJS-59dw9V76uDNU-lw-keg7wzYEd40OEYVJ5_fTCIkQyEa1fCt5UV-iAlBVp30ehq5Lk%24 ].  Please provide your address when submitting.  Thank you to all of you who have already reached out to me.  Your voice has been heard.
