Here’s the truth.
On September 14, 2021, Mantua Township police responded to a 911 call about a burglary in progress. Dispatch warned that one of the suspects was armed.
Corporal Robert Layton arrived first. He was immediately confronted by an armed man who pointed a gun at him and refused repeated commands to drop it. Seconds later, Officer Oldrati faced that same man pointing the gun at him.
He had no choice but to act.
A .45 caliber handgun was recovered right beside the suspect. And what did Salvatore do next? He began life-saving measures on the man he had just been forced to stop.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and the State Police Shooting Response Team investigated thoroughly. In October 2021, Oldrati was cleared, reinstated, and found to have acted lawfully and justifiably.
He went back to work. He was promoted. He was named Officer of the Year for the second time.
Then, out of nowhere, nearly two years later, the Attorney General’s office indicted him for “reckless manslaughter.” Exculpatory evidence was withheld from the grand jury. The process was manipulated to force an indictment against a good cop.
