** Thinking Threads
------------------------------------------------------------
August proved busier than hoped in many ways, including speaking engagements, travel to see clients, and addressing the challenges of freezing pizza on hot humid summer days. Nevertheless, I did reflect on the possibility of Albertan independence, DEI dynamics, pepperoni politics, nuclear power on the moon, and the possibility of lower interest rates. Links to my pieces about these topics are below.
I also want to draw special attention to an episode of the World’s Greatest Business Thinkers ([link removed]) podcast in which I share many of my thoughts about how to spot opportunities and identify risks in today’s uncertain environment. See below for more details.
Happy September!

Last week, I was in Alberta, Canada to give a keynote speech at the Energy Business Forum organized by the Canadian Energy Executive Association (CEEA) ([link removed]) . It gave me a chance to speak with fellow speakers Rick Perry, the former Governor of Texas and former U.S. Secretary of Energy, and Danielle Smith, the Premier of the Province of Alberta. I also had an opportunity to speak with business leaders, representatives of First Nations, as well as current and former government officials. And even though this wasn’t my first trip to the province (I’ve been dozens of times and count the Calgary Stampede as one of my favorite events…anywhere in the world!), I was again struck by the gracious people, clean air, and stunning beauty.
And potential. I mean LOTS of potential...

As an academic, author, consultant, entrepreneur, and corporate board member, I have long understood that federal regulations and government overreach were burdening businesses, but as the CEO of a food manufacturing business, I have a specific example worth highlighting.
Consider pepperoni. Goodwell Foods makes private label frozen pizzas for some of the largest retailers in the country and pepperoni pizza is our biggest seller. We will produce millions of pizzas this year and we will use hundreds of thousands of pounds of pepperoni. Because we buy our pepperoni as finished product, it comes to us after it’s been inspected and cured. It’s ready to eat and has been...

Those who have followed my work know that I unapologetically believe business leaders should focus on generating and increasing profits. Pursuing other objectives, like prioritizing social goals, inevitably leads to confused policies, unnecessary inefficiency, and management distraction – which in aggregate, leads to loss of potential profits.
Of late, a major distraction from the focus of profits was the pursuit of social priorities via environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. I have been a vocal critic of such efforts, arguing that all of us pay for such distractions via higher costs and, for owners of the businesses involved, lower profits. I have actively fought ([link removed]) against these efforts when I served on corporate...

Transportation Secretary and interim NASA Administrator Sean Duffy recently revealed the Administration’s plans to build a nuclear reactor on the Moon ([link removed]) . For anyone who may doubt that we’re currently in the middle of a new space race, it’s time to acknowledge reality: geopolitical competition has already moved beyond Earth.
While the idea of nuclear power on the moon isn’t new (NASA has kicked around this idea ([link removed]) before), the upcoming announcement will likely contain a specific timeline. The US is aiming to build a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030. The reactor being developed will produce enough electricity to power about 80 homes ([link removed]) .

Markets were shaken on Friday when the newly released ([link removed]) jobs report announced that only 73,000 jobs were created in July. This is down from the 115,000 expected and is another indicator confirming the economy is weakening. If there is any doubt of the slowdown, revisions to jobs data for previous months dispelled that belief. The May and June payroll numbers were revised ([link removed]) down by 258,000 to 19,000 and 14,000 jobs, respectively. And while these revisions are much smaller than 800,000 job revision
([link removed]) that took place last year, they help explain the growing gap between economic perceptions and realities.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nick Hague, host of the World’s Greatest Business Thinkers Podcast, about how a generalist approach can help us make sense of today overwhelming uncertainty. More importantly, we discussed how my framework and methodology of connecting seemingly disparate dots can reveal hidden opportunities and identify lurking risks. Please have a listen!

As many of you are aware, I’ve returned to writing my weekly newsletter and have been pleased by the rapidly growing interest in my thoughts. As I have in the past, I’m addressing a wide range of topics, ranging from geopolitics and economics to social trends to technology. The overall theme of my work is focused on “navigating uncertainty” and how a generalist approach can help us all make sense of what seems like chaos.
