Boysko Bulletin: Happy Labor Day!
Dear Friend,
It’s Labor Day Weekend! If there has ever been a time to be aware of the important role of our labor force, it is now. The American Federation of Federal, State, and Municipal Employees (AFSME) has been especially under attack since January. Quoting President of AFSME Lee Saunders:
“The power that labor unions bring [[link removed]] matters more than ever as billionaires and their yes-men in Congress are slashing wages, gutting health care [[link removed]] and silencing working people.
Even though working people are the backbone of our economy, “they’re getting squeezed by CEOs and anti-worker politicians who want to hand out tax breaks to the billionaire class at the expense of Medicaid [[link removed]] , food assistance [[link removed]] , worker protections [[link removed]] and our communities,” Saunders said.
You have a chance today to use your voice. VOTE! These elections have consequences and can show the rest of the nation that change is possible. As you know, I support the Democratic slate of candidates, including Abigail Spanberger for Governor, Ghazala Hashmi for Lt. Governor and Jay Jones for Attorney General, in addition to our Democratic slate of candidates for the House of Delegates. My choice of candidates is far more than blind faith in a political party. It’s recognizing that the goals of the democratic candidates reflect my values.
Government can work for all Virginians, not just the wealthy and not just those who’ve traditionally been in power at the expense of regular working people. Businesses can prosper when everyone has the opportunity for a world-class education, to make the most of their talents, and to succeed in their employment. We work to ensure that our most vulnerable Virginians will not be left behind. We work for a Virginia that is affordable - so everyone can afford medical care, housing, food, transportation, childcare, and eldercare. We work for a safe Virginia - our families should not fear for their children’s lives when they send them off to school. We work for a Virginia with clean air, clean water, and safe food. We work for a Virginia where people have access to healthcare, including abortion and birth control. We work for communities that are vibrant and diverse and welcoming. We work for the preservation of freedom of speech and democracy.
You have the power to choose your leaders. Know what the candidates stand for. And vote your values. On September 9, those of us who live in Congressional District 11 will elect a representative to succeed the late Congressman Gerry Connolly. I am strongly supporting James Walkinshaw. Then on November 4, we will vote for a new Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General. Make sure you are registered and show up. [[link removed]] Vote early in person or by mail. Early voting is underway for the CD 11 September 9th election, and starts on September 19th for the statewide elections. You have the power to make a positive change for your family, the workers who keep our state and nation running, and for the future of democracy.
As you attend barbeques or block parties this weekend, remember the folks who keep our communities running- keep in mind our workforce, our labor brothers and sisters. Happy Labor Day!
Kindest regards,
