John,

The redistricting fight playing out right now in several states will have national implications for fair maps and representation. Here’s a rundown of how we got here and what’s at stake:

FIRST: The Trump White House demanded Texas conduct a mid-decade redraw to manipulate its congressional map — a brazen power grab to help Republicans hold on to power.

THEN: Texas Republicans did exactly that, passing a racially gerrymandered map that dilutes minority voting power and could flip five seats in the midterms.

NOW: The White House is ramping up pressure for more states to pass similar extreme gerrymanders, openly pressuring hesitant legislators in Indiana and Missouri to get in line and follow Texas’s lead. That’s on top of a redistricting process already underway in Ohio, which could wipe out three more Democratic seats.

John, we're looking at an all-out brawl. Republicans have launched an unprecedented attack on our democracy, and it’s going to require an extraordinary effort to fight back and win.

California is taking the fight directly to voters by asking them to approve a new, temporary map that will undo some of the damage done by Texas and other states. We’ll be mobilizing voters on the ground to make their voices heard. At the same time, the fair maps movement is challenging Texas’s racial gerrymander in court. Together, we’re pushing back on multiple fronts against this attempt to thwart the will of voters.

But this is a tough fight that will require significant resources.
