A campaign win for buses!

Hello Supporter

I'm really pleased to be writing to you today to let you know that thanks to your support, we've achieved a major campaign win for buses!

The Transport Select Committee, which advises the Government on transport policy, has just published the findings of its latest inquiry, which we gave both written and oral evidence to. Not only were we the most quoted organisation in the Buses Connecting Communities report, more importantly the Committee adopted a number of our flagship asks in its recommendations for the Government, including:

  • Introduce a minimum bus service standard to ensure that every community has a usable bus service
  • Identify and protect existing socially necessary services and map where there are gaps
  • Move to needs based, long-term funding for buses
  • Include statutory guidance in the Bus Services Bill to create a national standard for bus stops.
“While the Government’s Bus Services Bill contains positive ideas, the Transport Committee’s report says ministers should go further to get bums back on seats. The Department for Transport should change the way funding is provided to ensure councils and bus firms would be committed to running socially necessary services, and, on that basis, should also adopt an ambition for all councils to develop and maintain a minimum level of public transport connectivity. To achieve this the sector will need greater financial certainty, which is why we say the Government should announce funding in five-year blocks." - Transport Committee Chair Ruth Cadbury MP
Whether you took one of our supporter actions, shared our posts on social media or helped with a donation, I wanted to say a huge thank you for playing a part in helping us to get these all important policy asks in front of the people making the decisions that shape our transport system.

If the Government accepts the Transport Select Committee's recommendations and includes them in subsequent policies, it will take us a step closer to a society where people’s needs are met, opportunities are unlocked and lives enriched.

Paul TuohyThank you once again for your support,

Silviya
