Executive Action Spotlight: CMS Pushes States to Reverify U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Status

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new “oversight” initiative promoting a narrative that ineligible immigrants are receiving Medicaid.  CMS is matching data on Medicaid and CHIP recipients against data from Social Security and USCIS and will send states a monthly list of enrollees whose U.S citizenship or eligible immigration status was not able to be verified. This effort is redundant with the steps that states already take to verify eligibility upon application.  PIF will be developing materials that partners can use with states, recipients and others to counter this narrative and prevent inappropriate re-verifications or denials of coverage. Sign-On: New Letter to Support Repeal of SNAP Cuts

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) and the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) are working together to build support to repeal the damaging cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) enacted in the recent budget reconciliation law, and to ask for your support with this effort. New legislation that will be introduced in September would repeal these SNAP cuts, and a new organizational sign-on letter by CBPP and FRAC provides an opportunity for you to urge Members of Congress in your delegation to cosponsor the bill, even before it’s formally introduced in mid-September. Visit the link below to view the letter and sign your organization on by September 17.
