Dear John,
It feels like the bad news is everywhere: on our phones, when we flip on the TV, in our inboxes. Trump and his allies have spent every day since January 20 loudly pushing their ultra-conservative, sexist, authoritarian agenda in every way they can. They want us to feel overwhelmed, as though there’s nothing anyone can do to stop the tide.
Well, I’ve got some good news for you, John. At the National Women’s Law Center, we were ready to take them on from day one. Since Trump took office, NWLC lawyers have met the moment by taking legal action to block Trump’s harm—something we can only do with the support of people like you.
Let’s protect our fundamental rights for the long term–start a monthly gift today ensures we have the resources to keep fighting back, no matter what Trump throws our way.
Here’s a bit of what NWLC lawyers have been up to:
- Defending Title IX: Working on behalf of the Victim Rights Law Center, NWLC has moved to intervene in two federal lawsuits to defend the Biden administration’s 2024 Title IX rule that strengthenedprotections for students facing sexual harassment and assault on campus. Every student deserves to feel safe at school. Help fuel the fight with a monthly gift >>
- Protecting access to emergency abortion care: Together with other civil rights organizations, NWLC is fighting to ensure hospitals continue to have the duty to provide emergency abortion care to their patients under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA)—a law the Trump administration is undermining in an attempt to block lifesaving abortion access. We’re also representing Dr. Anna Nusslock, whose “water broke” 15 weeks into her high-risk pregnancy with twins. Despite her doctor’s determination that Anna needed an abortion to prevent imminent risk to her life and health, the hospital prevented the doctor from providing the necessary care. Instead, hospital staff sent Anna away with a bucket and a towel. By the time she arrived at a different hospital that could give her the care she needed, she was actively hemorrhaging, and she is now suffering long-term effects. No one should be denied lifesaving medical care. Join the fight with a monthly gift >>
- Fighting for women workers and DEI programs: Together with civil rights organizations, NWLC is challenging provisions of President Trump’s January 2025 executive orders that severely restrict and chill diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and protect organizations’ right to use grant funding to expand economic opportunity and mobility for women. We’re building a more just, equitable future for all. Join the fight with a monthly gift >>
- Maintaining funding for groups fighting domestic and sexual assault and youth homelessness: On behalf of 17 state domestic violence and sexual assault organizations and five housing, youth, and homelessness organizations, NWLC and co-counsel successfully blocked the Trump administration’s illegal restrictions on grants issued by the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), and have asked the court to do the same with Departments of Health and Human Services and Housing and Urban Development. Our fundamental safety and security shouldn’t be politicized. Join the fight with a monthly gift >>
Legal fights like these aren’t futile—in fact, they are often the one thing stopping the Trump administration from succeeding in their most egregious attacks. But these cases take an enormous amount of time and resources, and that’s where you come in, John. Every dollar truly makes a difference.
Your reliable monthly support ensures NWLC is able to take on each new attack, to say “yes” to each critical lawsuit—and never, ever back down from protecting our rights.
Whatever you’re able to give (and even if you can’t give at all!), we’re so grateful that you’re part of the NWLC community. Together, we’re protecting and building the future we know is possible: one with freedom, justice, and equality for all.
In solidarity,
Rachel Smith
