Dear John,

A new poll from Morning Consult and commissioned by Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA) reinforces that greater education and communication between patients and their healthcare providers, including physicians and pharmacists, are needed to increase the likelihood of safe and responsible use of prescription opioids.

Together with our national partners, AAOA developed a suite of resources to help engage providers and educate consumers about prescription opioid safety, including:

  • AAOA Pharmacy Toolkit, created in partnership with the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), to help pharmacists engage in conversations with their patients and healthcare provider colleagues about prescription opioids;

  • Pledge to Pause, an initiative with the PA (Physician Assistant) Foundation to encourage providers and PA students to engage and educate patients when prescribing an opioid medication; and,

  • Prescription Opioid Safety Videos, featuring providers from the Cleveland Clinic and The Johns Hopkins Hospital to discuss important reminders about pain management, alternative treatment options to prescription opioids and how to talk to providers about opioid medications.
