Donald Trump
is trying to whitewash our history.
His administration just announced they are conducting a “comprehensive
internal review” of Smithsonian Museums like the National Museum of
African American History and Culture — the Blacksonian.
Their announcement stated this review aims to “ensure alignment with the
President's directive to celebrate American exceptionalism” and “remove
divisive or partisan narratives.”
We know what that really means. They want to rewrite our history to
reflect Trump and Republicans’ false narratives forged with white
supremacist ideology.
Let me be clear. Black history is American history.
Dictators try to shutter museums, ban books, censor history, and whitewash
the truth.
But we know the truth. That centuries of bondage and enslavement
brutalized black bodies and tore apart Black families. That Black women
have been the mothers of movements. That Black folks have endured
redlining and pay disparities. And yet still we rise.
We need to take a stand and fight this kind of authoritarianism. [ [link removed] ]Add
your name if you’re in agreement: No amount of whitewashing or erasure
will change the truth, and Trump has no right to censor our history,
ignore the systemic oppression of marginalized people, and attack our
intellectual freedom.

It is the impartial role of these museums to ensure a full, accurate, and
resonant telling of American history.
There is no American history without the brilliance of every marginalized
individual, the labor and talent of our enslaved Black ancestors, and the
contributions of our Black and brown communities, LGBTQ+ individuals,
indigenous people, individuals with disabilities, and others.
It is through studying our history that we learn how to overcome the
systems of oppression, the whims of petulant men thirsty for power, and
the will of dictators. That is why we will keep fighting back.
