Donald Trump has arranged a high-profile meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska — and instead of showing respect for our state, he insulted us on the national stage.

In a press conference, Trump called it " embarrassing " to be here and described our Capitol as " unsafe…dirty and disgusting. "

That’s not leadership. That’s contempt.

At points, Trump also seemed to think that he was "going to Russia to meet Putin." We’re not sure if we missed something, but Alaska is proudly this nation's 49th state. Now, we did not realize we aren’t American, but Trump believing that might explain why he’s been gutting our rural radio and emergency services, not to mention the public services working families across our state rely on.

Trump’s visit isn’t about even pretending to address the challenges our communities are facing. It’s about cozying up to a dictator while trying to distract from his own failures. He promised to end the war in Ukraine on his first day in office. Instead, we’re more than 200 days in, and the suffering of innocent civilians continues.

When Alaska’s own congressional delegation is silent as a war criminal visits our state, it’s a reminder of what’s at stake — not just for us, but for the security of our allies and the future of democracy around the globe.

While Trump offers photo ops with Putin, Americans are dealing with rising grocery costs, cuts to healthcare, and a growing anger against our leaders cozying up with violent world leaders. We need more voices in DC who will stand with our communities, stand with Ukraine, and stand up for what’s right.
