North Carolinians are still waiting on more than $100 million that the federal government promised to help local communities recover from Hurricane Helene.

Last month, I sent a letter to the federal government urging the release of the aid — aid that had already been approved. But they haven’t done so yet — so it’s up to us to fight for the resources our communities need to recover from last year’s disaster.

It’s been nearly a year since the storm struck, and in that time, we’ve been advocating to the federal government and Congress to send our state the help we need to rebuild. I’ve visited WNC over and over, so I’ve seen firsthand the progress folks have made. But I’ve also seen firsthand how much more we have to accomplish. Now, the federal government is not living up to its promise to our people, even as we continue to work to recover from Helene.

Our state can’t finish this recovery alone, and our communities are relying on the federal funding that’s already been approved to pay firefighters and keep the lights on. We have to work together on this.
