Garbage compactor installation begins at Olympic View Transfer Station, delays expected August 15 - early September

August 14, 2025

The Kitsap County Solid Waste Division is advising customers to plan for delays and disruptions at the Olympic View Transfer Station [ [link removed] ] from August 15 through early September due to installation of a second industrial garbage compactor. The project, which has been planned since 2023, will improve efficiency at the facility.

What to expect

Although the facility should remain open, customers may experience delays and disruptions during two project phases:

*Friday, August 15 through Wednesday, August 20: Equipment installation*

* Traffic control will be in place as the new compactor is moved.
* Expect delays entering and exiting the facility.

*Late August through early September: Power transition*

* The facility will switch to generator power during electrical work.
* Possible customer impacts:
* Slower credit card processing
* Longer lines at the payment window
* Short-term facility closures

About the project

The Olympic View Transfer Station, owned by Kitsap County, currently operates with one garbage compactor. This aging machine has required frequent repairs and maintenance in recent years. To improve reliability and increase capacity at the facility, the county bought a second compactor in 2023 for $1.4 million.

The new machine — a SSI Shredding Systems 4500SPH Pre-load Compactor [ [link removed] ] — weighs 176,000 pounds and provides 200 tons of compaction force. Once operational, it will work alongside the existing compactor to process and load garbage into 48-foot intermodal containers, which are then shipped by train to the Columbia Ridge Landfill [ [link removed] ] in Arlington, Oregon.

The original compactor will remain in operation until its scheduled replacement in 2026.
