John,

Last week, I visited the Northwest Detention Center, where ICE is currently detaining more than 1,500 people.

With horrific stories coming out of facilities like the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida, I want to ensure that the people held here in my district are treated with respect and dignity. We are all human beings.

Here are some of my observations and concerns from the visit:

• The facility has been here in Tacoma for ten years, but the number of detainees has more than doubled, from 700 people held last November to 1,562 now. The facility’s capacity is 1,575.

• The facility has a 25% vacancy rate among medical staff, not because of staff departures but because of the rising population. I spoke to two detainees who voiced concerns about medical care.

• I learned that detainees are only given four pairs of underwear each week, even though laundry is done once a week.

• The week of my visit, there were independent reports of seven detainees suspected of having Tuberculosis. The staff at the facility told me there are no active cases of Tuberculosis, but the reporting and my visit leave me deeply concerned about the health of the detainees.

I firmly believe that detaining hundreds of our neighbors does nothing to make us safer.

These detainees are people who are being snatched up from their workplaces, from the sidewalk, from their immigration hearings. To then place them in unsanitary and unsafe conditions is cruel and dehumanizing.

I will make many more visits to the Northwest Detention Center. In the meantime, we all can keep speaking up and keep pushing for transparency, safety, and dignity for our neighbors.

Please watch and share KING 5 coverage of my visit to the Tacoma facility, and make sure everyone you know is aware of what is happening in our community → [[link removed]]

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

— Emily
