Washington, D.C. should be the shining city on a hill, representing a beacon of freedom, safety, and prosperity for America.
Sadly, our country’s lawless capital city is far from this goal.
The issue of public safety in D.C. has become front and center following the brutal attack of a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer. As you may know, an ex-DOGE staffer was recently beaten as he attempted to prevent a carjacking by a violent gang of teenagers. The bloodied images of the attack grabbed President Trump’s attention, prompting him to rightly criticize the city’s soft-on-crime policies that allow juveniles to wreak havoc throughout Washington.
Unfortunately, vicious assaults are common throughout our nation’s capital.
In recent years, Members of Congress have been attacked and carjacked just blocks from the U.S. Capitol building. Congressional staffers have also suffered at the hands of violent criminals, including a 21-year-old intern who was fatally shot in the streets of D.C. earlier this summer. Residents and visitors have been assaulted, murdered, and carjacked. Additionally, numerous small businesses and popular retail stores face regular lootings and robberies.Â
Notably, Washington, D.C.’s violent crime rate is higher than several capital cities in developing countries, as well as major capitals like Paris, London, and Madrid.
Folks, President Trump is 100% right — it’s time to make Washington, D.C. safe again.
Back in 2023, I successfully led legislation, H.J.Res. 26, to strike down the D.C. City Council’s Revised Criminal Code Act (RCCA), a dangerous bill that would have eliminated mandatory minimum sentences for all violent crime except first degree murder and reduced maximum penalties for most criminal offenses. This misguided measure would have undoubtedly emboldened criminals and exacerbated the ongoing crime crisis plaguing our nation’s capital city. Despite all odds and an initial veto threat by President Biden, my commonsense measure passed both the House and Senate with bipartisan support and was eventually signed into law by President Biden.
While crime in our nation’s capital would certainly be worse without H.J.Res. 26, more must be done to restore law and order in Washington, D.C. for the American people.
Thankfully, President Trump and his Administration are taking action.
On Monday, President Trump announced sweeping efforts to save our nation’s capital from violent crime. Specifically, he signed an Executive Order declaring a crime emergency in D.C. and a Presidential Memorandum to restore law and order in Washington. From invoking his authority to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control to directing the Secretary of Defense to mobilize the District of Columbia National Guard to address the epidemic of crime, President Trump is taking critical steps to make our capital city safe for all Americans.
Please know that in addition to supporting President Trump’s efforts, I remain committed to leading and advancing commonsense measures in Congress to ensure our nation’s capital is safe for you, your family, and all Americans to enjoy.
