The Newsletter for the Movement for
Economic, Climate, and Racial Justice
|
As we endure record heatwaves, wildfire smoke, flash floods, and earthquakes, the White House guts the Environmental Protection Agency, deregulating the polluting fossil fuel industry that’s destroying our planet. As we shout from the rooftops that the cost of living is killing our communities, Congress makes fatal cuts to Medicaid and Medicare, stripping healthcare and benefits from millions of Americans. And as we march in the streets for justice and peace, ICE agents carry out Trump’s racist agenda, kidnapping and deporting our immigrant neighbors, and the horrors of the genocide in Gaza reach a point of no return.
In moments like this, it is easy to feel powerless. But there is hope on the horizon. In New York City, voters cast their ballots in the Democratic mayoral primary for a campaign that supports green schools, universal childcare, and a $30 minimum wage — policies ALIGN has been advocating for for years. An unprecedented coalition came together to shock the billionaire class and deliver a clear message: New Yorkers are hungry to turn the page for a healthy, affordable city and a dignified life. It’s a timely reminder that together, we have the power to change our conditions, transform our systems, and put power back in the hands of the working class. The workers united can never be defeated!

Amazon Workers Primed for a Fight
|
This year’s Amazon Prime Day sale was a grueling four days long — double that of previous years. But as Amazon’s profit margins expand, so do dangers for workers. Injuries spike during sales events as relentless demand converges with dangerous summer heat waves, mandatory overtime, and unsafe worksites. In New York, our long-fought Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Act is now law, but without strong enforcement and employer accountability, workers won’t reap the benefits they so sorely need.
On day two of the sale, Amazon Labor Union-IBT Local 1 workers walked out to protest unsafe conditions and demand a fair contract. ALIGN joined workers outside of JFK8 in Staten Island to support the call for action and urge Governor Hochul to take warehouse safety as seriously as Amazon takes their bottom line. We need proactive, strict benchmarks for employers to comply with the law and protect workers as intended, and we’ll keep fighting until every warehouse worker is safe on the job.

Take Us Out to the Ball Game!
|
Play ball! Last week, ALIGN took a trip to Citi Field to see the Mets take on the Guardians for our annual summer outing. While our dear Mets did not emerge victorious, our team sure did — we had a grand time taking photos on the field and meeting Mr. and Mrs. Met!
