It was another warm summer night in North Philly, and it was probably close to bedtime. They might have been playing make-believe, or they might have just wondered what the object was.
Whatever the kids were up to, it ended when a young child shot their 2-year-old brother in the shoulder.
This horrific incident that happened on July 21 isn’t unique. At least 49 children ages 10 and under were victims of an accidental shooting in Philadelphia in the last decade, according to 6abc.
This time, a sibling had gotten hold of their mother’s loaded, legally owned gun. The toddler who was shot survived, but too many children do not.
Gun violence is the number one killer of young people in Pennsylvania, but it doesn’t have to be. Right now, our lawmakers have an opportunity to introduce, cosponsor, and pass a secure gun storage law that could drastically reduce youth firearm injuries and deaths.
Send a message to your legislator now telling them to protect PA kids by passing lifesaving secure storage legislation.
