Dear Friend,
We have a short memo today, so we'll get right to the point – Trump’s latest actions in Washington, D.C., are a chilling escalation of his authoritarian agenda. Deploying the National Guard and federal law enforcement under the guise of addressing ‘crime’ is a direct attack on immigrants, unhoused individuals, and those exercising their right to protest. This is a full-on assault on DC residents, businesses, communities, and a violation of its fundamental rights as a city to govern and run itself. Read our full statement on this dangerous overreach and what we’re calling on Congress to do. Let’s stand together to protect our communities and our democracy.
In some better news – yesterday, we were proud to be part of the Renters United Maryland Housing Justice Summit, a powerful and transformative gathering where renters and advocates from across Maryland came together to set the housing agenda for 2026. The energy in the room was inspiring, and the vision we built together will help drive real change for communities across the state. Read on for more updates and ways to get involved. In solidarity, The Progressive Maryland Team |

Support our ongoing campaign to make Marylanders aware of the enormous cuts to healthcare in the 2025 federal budget. Cuts and changes to Medicaid will throw tens of thousands of seniors, low-income folks, people with disabilities, and children off of healthcare. The cost of healthcare will rise for everyone thanks to these cuts, cuts to the Affordable Care Act, and the loss of funding for hospitals and nursing homes. Rep. Andy Harris, CD-01, supported these cuts. Help us reach out to his constituents to educate them about the cuts and show them how to hold Rep. Harris accountable.
Here are ways to take action:
Watch this video from our late-night vigil in D.C. in May, when Republicans started ramming this bill through with virtually no hearings or vetting of what was in the bill on an accelerated timeline. The way in which the budget bill was handled by Republicans demonstrates how the Trump regime is trying to silence voices and take our power. Let’s not let them! Join us!

Fight The Book Ban
Join Community Partners for Harford County Public Schools at the next Board of Education meeting on Aug. 18 to fight the banning of the book Flamer and all future books this Board of Education is looking remove from our school libraries. Despite some board members' previous anti-LGBTQ comments since 2023 regarding Flamer and other texts, this Board voted in secret to ban the book, trying to hide their censorship and anti-LGBTQ comments by stating the book is "pervasively vulgar." We will be meeting outside the Board of Education for a rally at 5:30 p.m. and then going to the Board of Education meeting for public comment at 6 p.m. This Board is setting precedent on a process to ban other books that do not follow their ideological and political beliefs. We must fight back. More details will follow for those who RSVP, fill out the form to fight book banning here.
