** Explosion at U.S. Steel’s Clairton Works leaves one dead, two missing, dozens hurt ([link removed])

An explosion Monday at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh ([link removed]) has left one dead, dozens wounded and two people unaccounted for, with emergency workers on site trying to rescue them, officials said.

The Allegheny County Health Department in a release asked residents within a mile of the plant to stay inside, “close all windows and doors, set HVAC systems to recirculate, and avoid activities that draw in outside air, such as using exhaust fans.” The department is monitoring emissions, but has not detected levels of key pollutants above federal standards.

The Allegheny County Emergency Services said a fire at the plant started around 10:51 a.m. The Clairton Coke Works, a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, is considered the largest coking operation in North America.
