Maryland Matters: Federal job losses jumped to 12,700 in Maryland, most of any state

Earlier this year, our agency released a report highlighting what many of us know: for years, we’ve had a symbiotic relationship with the federal government. We released this report to quantify the significance of that relationship to our economy (www.marylandcomptroller.gov/content/dam/mdcomp/md/reports/research/federal-spending-in-md.pdf).

Unfortunately, DOGE and the Trump administration are now breaking that relationship, and all of America – including Marylanders – are paying the price.

Federal decisions about workforce reductions, cuts to research funding, and changes to retirement benefits may seem like numbers on a page in Washington, but here at home, they have real consequences – our family members, our neighbors, and our friends are losing their jobs for no reason.

Our federal workers are nurses, scientists, park rangers, teachers, and engineers. They discover lifesaving treatments, protect our environment, and teach our children. They worked for USAID organizations and helped people around the world. They are Marylanders who dedicate their lives to public service, and they deserve better.

Maryland is home to the third-largest federal workforce in the country, and our economy depends on it. When these jobs disappear, families suffer. Our entire state feels the impact.

As your Comptroller, I’m committed to playing my part in ensuring Maryland’s economy is resilient, and that means standing up when our federal workforce is under threat.

We must protect these jobs, the people who work in them, and the vital services they provide. And we must also let our neighbors and friends know that WE value them, even if DOGE doesn’t.

Will you add your name today to join me in support of federal workers?
