A Pittsburgh police officer shot Leon Ford five times during a 2012 traffic stop, paralyzing him and changing his life forever. The trauma and anger that followed eventually gave way to a mission, he writes in this essay ([link removed]) .
“My grandfather asked, ‘Do you want to make a point, or a difference?’” Ford recalls ([link removed]) .
A turning point came when he met with then-Police Chief Scott Schubert. The two built a mutual understanding and eventually co-founded the Hear Foundation.
Now Ford speaks regularly with students, his memoir is taught in Pittsburgh Public Schools and he works to make the police force more representative of the community ([link removed]) .
