** DEAR FRIENDS,
------------------------------------------------------------
Last Saturday the SHARK team observed and recorded a steer tailing event in DeKalb County, Illinois. As usual there were numerous injuries, including four deglovings, and two obviously broken legs. The event continued beyond its scheduled end time of 5:30 pm, with the last steer being run at 6:33 pm, which further contributed to the distress of the animals involved.
A portion of the steers tail being held by the man after being violently degloved.
DeKalb Sheriff’s Department was contacted multiple times throughout the day about blatant violations of animal humane laws. Unfortunately the response was consistently dismissive: “but they have a permit.” Apparently the police don’t understand that there is no permission to break State Law.
After hours of injured animals suffering, a veterinarian was brought in, but he seemed more focused on performing rope tricks than attending to the injured animals. One steer was with a badly injured leg was never attended to at all.
Veterinarian that was more interested in practicing rope tricks than in practicing veterinary care on injured, suffering animals.

Dirt, grime, and grass filled water trough.
There was no water provided until we brought it to the attention of the police. Even then, the water containers were tainted with grass and dirt.
Dekalb County Animal Control never showed up which indicated that DeKalb County is not serious about upholding Illinois State Humane Laws.
A well-meaning law is rendered impotent without enforcement. We will be at the Aug 20th County Board Meeting to express our deep concerns, and we will update you at that time.
