Today marks two years since the wildfires that devastated Lahaina and Kula — when we lost loved ones, homes, businesses, and the communities we knew.

That loss is part of us now — but so are the memories, the bonds, and the spirit we carry forward.

Since that day, we’ve come together as a state, turning grief and remembrance into action — and a recovery effort that has been fast, fair, and compassionate.

We’ve built and repaired homes, streamlined permits, and supported long-term recovery projects to make sure we build back stronger and smarter. We created the Hawaii Office of Recovery and Resiliency to unite county, state, federal, and grassroots partners.

One of our greatest milestones has been Ka La‘i Ola in West Maui — a community of 450 homes on 57 acres we built in West Maui to house survivors with dignity and speed. Nearly 300 families are already living there — more than 745 individuals, including 19 multi-generational families.

We broke ground in April 2024, and within just 17 months — a fraction of the typical 4 to 6 years for projects this size — we built and filled nearly 300 homes. The first nine families moved in just three months after construction began, and we did what no other state has done — we delivered permanent housing for survivors ineligible for FEMA assistance.

Beyond Ka La‘i Ola, our housing programs have supported nearly 350 families, and our Disaster Case Management Program has connected more than 6,600 survivors to over $140 million in resources. We reached a $4 billion global settlement to speed recovery funds directly to those who need them most.

Our support doesn’t stop at housing — Ka La‘i Ola is also home to Hui No Ke Ola Pono, Maui Behavioral Health, Piha Wellness, and many more partners helping residents heal from trauma, regain stability, and reconnect.

Recovery is more than roofs over heads — it’s stability, healthcare, education, food, mental health, and cultural restoration. From Moku‘ula to Lahaina, we’re ensuring recovery means dignity for our children, our kūpuna, and our working families.

To the people of Maui: we will not stop supporting your healing and recovery. This effort is about renewing the places we love and the communities that make Hawaii home for all of us. Mahalo for your strength, your heart, and your trust.

The people of Hawaii are with you — today and always.

Mahalo,

Governor Josh Green
